Maritime shipping contributes over a gigaton of CO2 annually and is considered one of the hard-to-abate industries with projected reliance on fossil fuels for decades to come. Post-combustion carbon capture (PCCC) being considered as an essential path to limit the industry’s carbon emissions. Several challenges including high energy requirements, capital cost and solvent toxicity hinder rapid implementation of PCCC.

Hiili Inc. has developed a robust biocatalyst-assisted process that addresses the problem to accelerate Post Combustion Carbon Capture adoption. Hiili Inc. has established strong collaborations with world class partners for biocatalyst design and development, carbon capture application testing, biocatalyst production scale-up and ultimately Maritime carbon capture commercialization.

Our proprietary biocatalyst significantly reduces the solvent-based carbon capture OpEx due to lower energy requirement. This results in $500k - $800k cost savings per ship per year. The biocatalyst also allows the use of the less corrosive, less toxic and more benign and more stable carbon capture solvent.
